Lewis Hamilton has found a way of spending some of his hard earned cash, private plates bearing the registration number LEW 1S are the latest purchase made by him. Previously owned by Bob Lewis who paid ?50 grand for it Lewis had to bid him 4 times that to get them on his Mercedes 4 by 4.Not too expensive really for his perfect registration number.

If your V5 registration document says that your registration number is non-transferable you are still allowed to have private plates on your vehicle. The non-transferable comment refers to the existing number and not the registration number shown on the private plates you have bought. If the existing registration begins with the letter Q then you cannot have private plates on that vehicle.

Private plate auctions.One unusual way to buy your private plates is to buy them at an auction. These are held several times a year in different parts of the country so everyone should be able to attend. You can bid by telephone, postal or over the internet. Most private plates sold are expensive but there are some for just a few hundred pounds.If you are intending to spend a lot it would be best to attend in person so you can gauge who you are up against.
